For a period of seven years, between 1999 and 2006 breast cancer rates declined. Some attributed this, in part, to a Women’s Health Initiative research study which found that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was a contributing factor to the development of breast cancer incidences in women. After the study was released (2002), fewer doctors prescribed HRT to their patients.
