It’s that time of year again, time to get sweaty and tossed around in a big crowd while watching the bands you love. Yep, Warped Tour 2009 Pre-Sale tickets are available now. With the pre-sale ticket, you will get to skip everyone in line and get in the show first. Who’s playing this year? A lot of good bands like: 3OH!3, The Ataris, Underoath, and others.

Say What? Yeah, you heard me right. Michael Mayer, director of Broadway’s Spring Awakening, and Green Day decided to get together for a musical. The entire theatrical production will be based off of Green Day’s American Idiot. “It doesn’t make a lot of sense,” front man Billie Joe Armstrong told the NYT, “but that’s what I love about it. When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream. The American Idiot musical will open September 4th at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre and run through October 11th.

If you have an ear for music, than you can listen to The Gaslight Anthem and know that they are going to far, far places. They are going on tour overseas in February of 2009. Check them out here.

If you haven’t heard of the band The Bronx, definitely check them out. They are a hard hitting rock band hailing from Los Angeles, CA. When i first took a listen they reminded me a little of the Offspring but then they started to grow on me as a band i haven’t quite heard before. Their lyrics are very interesting as well, take a listen to the song “Past Lives,” you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Angelina Jolie admits to Harper Bazaar that she is “just a punk kid with tattoos at heart.” She also told China Daily that she often feels like an outsider. “I don’t walk around feeling I need to apologize or explain myself,” she says.

Mark hoppus of Blink 182 and +44 recently sat down with pickRset and did an interview. He talks about being a producer, the challenges he has faced from it, and his future as a musician.

Der Bomber, is that German?

‘der bomber’ is indeed a German name, literally meaning ‘the bomber’, it was a nickname attributed to a 70′s German footballer called gerd muller who had a phenomenal goalscoring record, the name is a nod to all of us who support lower league clubs and christen our treasured star striker with the name (eg nicky ‘der bomber’ maynard), our politics our probably summed up in that concept, pride in squalor.

Who are you rooting for in Euro 2008?

I watched euro 2008 as a complete neutral but enjoyed watching Holland the most.

Your songs have a load of energy! Have your songs always been this energetic?

‘hard and fast’ has always been the rationale, i believe we are still yet to hit our top gear. the energy and passion are derived from the fact that we mean absolutely every word we say, chord we play, we were once described as ‘viciously intelligent’, that’s the best description of der bomber i’ve heard.

My favorite is “Swimming of Sinking.” What is this song about?

the ‘swimming or sinking’ lyrics were written by another band member so i couldn’t say for sure what they’re about, i suppose it’s all down to interpretation, i interpret it to be about the chancers and fakers who latch onto indie culture now that it’s fashionable, you can walk into any high street clothes shop and come out looking like a member of the klaxons without actually understanding it or ‘meaning’ it

Say you could do one thing to change the world, what would it be?

That’s quite an expansive question, people write 4 billion word essays on that sort of shit and I’m not nearly informed or qualified enough to answer it but i will say that greed, waste and religion probably contribute to 99.9% of the worlds problems and are possibly more linked to each other than you’d think

First off i just want to say thanks for doing the interview and best of luck with everything in the future.

Thank you for asking us! I think your website is a really awesome idea!

How’d you all meet?

The origin of Good Luck Varsity is a really long and twisting story but I’ll try to keep it short. Essentially my brother Evan and I both played in a band called The Rising Tide. When all was said and done at the end of TRT we we’re actually pretty relieved to be done with it because it had strayed so far from what we really wanted to be doing. At first we recorded a couple demos in our basement and put them online and then we eventually recorded our EP Head High Heavy Hearted. We used the EP to get potential band mates interested in joining us and put an application up online. Richie and Tim we’re already our good friends and they we’re an easy choice.
Drew and Dan both responded to our search online and after hearing both of them play we canceled all of our other auditions because we knew that this was going to be our line up

Jordan, those are some rad YouTube videos! Anything out there that people MUST see if they haven’t yet?

Haha thank you! I guess besides music editing and directing videos has always been something I’ve loved to do.
Everybody should definitely check out “No, Frankenstein” I did the editing on that video and actually won an award for it

7 Members, wow, thats pretty amazing. What’s your writing process like?

Well we actually only play with 6 members live. Our good friend Jeriah is filling in on Guitar and vocals while Tim is away taking care of some things.

We’ve just recently started to write new music for a new EP that we’re planning to record and release sometime this year. Generally somebody brings the shell of a song to practice and we all work together to fill it out.We just recorded our first real song as a full band on Sunday and we’ll be posting it sometime soon

Tell us a little bit about the meaning behind the song “The Show Must Go On.” We really like the upbeat sound and keyboard effects in it.

“The Show Must Go On” was kind of our way of laying The Rising Tide to rest. Evan and I we’re a little disappointed with the way that everything went down at the end of TRT and the song addresses some of those issues. The song is definitely different than everything else we’ve written and it was the first song/demo we ever released. It’s strange in that it’s extremely upbeat and happy sounding but the only really happy part is the last verse which basically says that despite the fact that one door had closed in our faces God was there to open another one with even better things in store. I guess that’s why the song is called “The Show Must Go On”. I don’t write the lyrics for the band but in my mind I see “The Show Must Go On” as a precursor to “Plan B” which has a similar message to that last verse that I mentioned.

What does everyone do when you guys aren’t jammin out?

Well you already know that I do videos sometimes, and I also like to go to the movies every chance I get. Evan spends a lot of time playing and coaching soccer, Richie is really into Airsoft and recently Xbox 360, Dan loves playing his guitar and Legend of Zelda games, Drew seems to really enjoy selling computers at Best Buy and reading the Chronicles of Narnia out loud and doing different voices for each character, Jeriah is really into watching reruns of One Tree Hill, and Tim loves creating new sandwiches out of strange ingredients.

As a band, what would be your dream show? (any venue, any line up, ect)

Oh man that’s tough. I’m sure every one of the guys would say something different but I think we’re all really looking forward to being on Cornerstone Festival this Summer.
I think that we are the only unsigned band on the actual festival which is really amazing

A shout out to any fans?

We have really awesome fans, we love all of the kids that come out to support us in our home town and at the Wayne shows which are always a huge success. We love playing free shows for our fans and I think that they really appreciate that. We try really hard to have at least one or two free shows every couple months as our way of saying thank you to all of our fans. We love all of you and without you we’d have really really boring weekends.

I told you a few days ago that “The Day” was going to take over the west coast… and I’m not kidding. They offer a truly unique style, which can be captured when listening to songs like “Midwest Coast Girl.”

We had a chance to ask the guys a few Q’s….

What’s the history of The Day?

Ever since high school, we have had a high interest in not only writing but recording music as well.(in fact, come to think of it, Adam and I, (stephen), have never recorded in a studio aside from our own or our uncles. Where that fact comes to play is with the creation of The Day. In an effort to understand the new recording system that Adam was developing over the summer of 2007, different song demos and samples evolved into full and marketable songs. Thus, into the production came jonny and ryan, who had been long time friends and musicians growing up with us. Although I (Stephen) go to school in san diego, which is far from close enough to fully function as a band, the songs were not complete until there was a full collaboration on the music through Adam and myself together with Ryan and Jonny as well. Now it is 2008, we have yet to play shows but we plan on touring California, at least, over the summer of this year. Although we all plan on staying in school, we also plan on promoting the band online and writing and recording as much as we can through the spring, summer, and wherever it takes us. To us, it is about the joy in writing and recording music, and response from fans that drives us to continue what we do.

Are you going to be planning a tour soon?

Summer 2008 expect to see a few dates lined up in Northern and Southern California.

We really love the songs; my favorite is “Never Ready.” Where do the inspirations for most of your lyrics come from?

To us, lyrical meaning in a song stands just as high as the musical content as well. Our lyrics are based upon real life situations, relationship experiences, family and even some spiritual issues at hand in our lives. Although songs that are solely based on relationship experience are most likely written by one member in the band, Adam and I like to collaborate and write together. “I’ve Been Screaming” is an example of such a song. Since we are brothers, this song applies to both of us. It relates to the time and situation of the move our family made in 2003 from California to Michigan, and our emotional struggle to bear with leaving our old band and never fully leaving California. (and look, here we are again!)

Two relatives in one band? Do you guys ever smack each other around?

Funny you say that, Adam and I just made a video blog to post on our site, and before we came to a final product, there was plenty of footage before of us bickering and coming to grips on how we were going to post and produce the blog (we actually even thought about posting that too because when we looked at it, it gave us a good laugh)! All in good favor, but to us, when it is time to be professional about our music, theres no trouble in putting our brotherly “Im older and bigger than you” motives aside. (But I mean hey, if your a solid band, you should feel like brothers anyway!) theres always gonna be some smacking around!

What do you all do when you’re not rocking out?

Well to be honest, we live pretty normal lives. Adam and Ryan go to Santa Clara University, I go to the University of San Diego, Jonny goes to school in Fremont, Ca. We work, we play, we jam. I would say our hobbies all differ but they range from things like photography, surfing, snowboarding, cars, partying, Mac computers, (Adam works at Apple.), and just hanging out having a good time with friends!
